Featured Psychologist
Esteban L. Olmedo, PhD, is a well-known and respected figure in the psychological community for his works in relation to ethnic minority issues. In 1967, Olmedo graduated summa cum laude from Baylor University with his Bachelors of Arts in psychology. He later went on to earn his PhD in experimental psychology from Baylor University in 1972.
Shortly after moving to California, Olmedo became a member of the Spanish Speaking Mental Health Research Center at the University of California Los Angeles where he applied his statistical and psychometric skills to study the measurement of acculturation among Latinos in America.
He then became the first director of the Ethnicity, Race, and Cultural Affairs Portfolio at the American Psychological Association (APA) headquarters in Washington, D.C. Olmedo received the Lifetime Distinguished Contribution Award from APA, Division 45, Society for the Psychological Study of Culture, Ethnicity and Race. He was also the founding president of Division 45.
After his time with Ethnicity, Race, and Cultural Affairs Portfolio (ERCA), Olmedo returned to California to teach and hold the senior administrator in several positions at the California School of Professional Psychology. He has published numerous works, especially on the subject of psychometric issues involved in measuring acculturation. Olmedo retired from academia in 2001.
