What is LIWP?

LIWP is a program of the Leadership Development Institute at APA with three major components: education, leader outreach, and research.

Every LIWP Participant Leader’s journey starts with the Signature Program, a year-long, virtual course with both live and asynchronous components. After graduating from the Signature Program, alumnae gain access to the LIWP community of leaders, exclusive continuing education opportunities, webinars, and social events.

Our research focuses on the long-term achievements of the leaders who have completed the Signature Program, as well as more general leadership trends of women, transgender, and gender nonbinary psychologists.

LIWP is committed to transforming its membership, programming, content, and operations to be fully inclusive of trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse people. This focus is in line with scientific and sociocultural understandings of gender as a nonbinary construct in the 21st century. This transformation reflects LIWP’s commitment to truly address the ways in which patriarchal culture and gender-related oppressions, including sexism, heterosexism, monosexism, and cissexism, impact the professional leadership development within the field of psychology.

In an effort to continue Institute focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), the LIWP Advisory Committee called for the formation of a taskforce to focus on gender inclusivity. The taskforce, comprised of Advisory Committee members with professional expertise in EDI, gender diversity, and the psychology of gender, was officially formed in September 2020 with the goal of increasing LIWP inclusivity of trans, nonbinary, and gender diverse people.

In May, 2021 LIWP staff held a focus group of LGBTQIAA+ alums, moderated by Virginia Quiñónez, PhD, to explore the experiences of Participant Leaders related to gender diversity and inclusivity in the LIWP Signature Program.

In August, 2021 the taskforce recommended a gender inclusivity vision statement to help guide the future directions of the LIWP.

In October, 2021 the LIWP Advisory Committee officially accepted the gender inclusivity vision statement.

The LIWP is a project with three major components: education, leader outreach, and fundraising.

The education component is represented by the Signature Program, two highly interactive, competencies-based workshops presented in the spring and fall. In 2020, the LIWP Signature Program was converted from an in-person program to a fully virtually program consisting of eight, live, 3-hour sessions in the Spring and six, live, 3-hour sessions in the Fall. The eight sessions in the Spring workshop are presented roughly every two weeks beginning in early March and ending in early June. The six sessions in the Fall workshop are presented roughly every two weeks beginning in late September and ending in early December. In addition to the live virtual sessions, the Signature Program consists of asynchronous, self-paced components and a live graduation, recognition, and awards ceremony.

The Leaders Outreach Component focuses on the advancement and continuing education of LIWP Leaders who have completed the programs and provides a network of LIWP Leaders, current and former faculty, staff, advisory committee, and subcommittee members. Under this component of the program, LIWP maintains a listserv for networking, provides an annual publication LeadHership, and works with the APA Human Rights team to hold six regular events for LIWP Leaders. These events include quarterly webinars for Leaders, the Annual Dr. Jean Lau Chin Address on diversity in leadership, and an annual, in-person reunion, held during the APA annual convention.
