Open Access for APA Journals authors
The APA Journals Office supports authors’ choices on how to publish their work. We are committed to offering options that we believe comply with most funder and institutional requirements and support both self-archiving (“green”) and APC (paid for via an article processing charge and also known as “gold”) Open Access options. Submitting an article is free of charge.
For additional resources to support our authors and advance open-science practices in psychological science, see open science at APA.
All APA authors, including those without APC funding, have the option of self-archiving (also known as “green” open access), outlined in our internet posting guidelines.
You may post a prepublication copy of the final manuscript as accepted for publication, on your personal website, your employer’s server, in your institution’s repository, reference managers (e.g., Mendeley), preprint servers (e.g., Psy-ArXiv), and author social networks (e.g., Academia.edu and ResearchGate). The posted prepublication copy of the manuscript must carry the appropriate copyright notice and include a link to the final article as published in the journal. See the internet posting guidelines for details.
Funder compliance
The APA Journals Office complies with major funder requirements and is a member of the Clearinghouse for the Open Research of the United States (CHORUS).
Please indicate your funder source at the manuscript submission stage. Authors whose funders require self-archiving under a CC-BY license (PDF, 34KB) may do so. As a service to authors, we will handle deposit of the accepted manuscript to PubMed, with the expectation that the manuscript will be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the final version of the article is published.
Note that we comply fully with the open access requirements of UKRI, Wellcome, and NIHR. Where required by their funder, authors retain the right to distribute their author accepted manuscript (AAM), such as via an institutional and/or subject repository (e.g. EuropePMC), under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) license for release no later than the date of first online publication.
Choose one of our article processing charge (APC) Open Access options to make your article freely available immediately on publication.
Open Access in APA's Hybrid Journals
APC Open Access is offered for all APA subscription-based journals. Authors can make their article freely available for an article processing charge (APC) of $3,000. Articles are published under APA copyright and thus require permission for some forms of reuse.
Open Access in Technology, Mind, and Behavior
Technology, Mind, and Behavior is APA’s open access, interdisciplinary, peer-reviewed journal publishing original work in the area of human–technology interaction with a focus on human behavior at the individual or group level. Authors make their articles freely available in this journal for an article processing charge (APC) of $1,200.
Committed to open science and transparency, Technology, Mind, and Behavior is part of APA Open®, an interactive open access platform. Authors are empowered to dynamically present their research findings to immerse readers in ways going beyond standard PDF experiences.
Articles are published under a CC-BY-NC-ND (Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivatives) license, allowing others to download and share them for noncommercial use as long as authors are credited. Authors whose funders require it may publish under a CC-BY license (PDF, 34KB).
See document deposit procedures for APA Journals for more information.
Authors affiliated with institutions participating in APA’s open access agreements (also known as “Read and Publish” agreements) have the option to publish open access in all hybrid APA journals at no cost to the authors.
The aim of the agreements is to bolster both research access and open access publishing and to provide authors with a simplified process to comply with funder mandates at no direct cost to authors.
Read about our agreements, check your eligibility, and learn how to submit your article.
