A practical guide to culturally responsive care in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities

From workforce shortages and geographic isolation to unique ethical and clinical considerations, providing effective mental health care in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities requires a distinct set of knowledge, skills, and strategies. The APA Committee on Rural Health developed this Rural Mental Health Toolkit to help psychologists, trainees, and allied professionals meet that need with confidence and cultural humility.

This toolkit brings together practical guidance across six key areas: understanding rural contexts and populations, building clinical competency, strengthening the rural workforce pipeline, engaging in policy and advocacy, forming community partnerships, and accessing specialized training resources for the populations rural providers most often serve.

Rather than treating rural communities as underserved or deficient, the toolkit centers on their strengths while equipping providers with concrete tools to navigate the realities of rural practice, from dual relationships and telesupervision to legislative advocacy and cross-sector collaboration.
