This award recognizes the outstanding achievements of students who have made significant contributions to the understanding of socioeconomic status and the lives and well-being of the socioeconomically disadvantaged.

Deadline:

Sponsor: Committee on Socioeconomic Status (CSES)

Description

APA's Committee on Socioeconomic Status (CSES) invites nominations, including self-nominations, for the CSES Leadership Awards. CSES Leadership Awards recognize the outstanding achievements of psychologists, students of psychology, and organizations which have made significant contributions to the understanding of socioeconomic status and the lives and well-being of the socioeconomically disadvantaged by:

  • promoting scientific understanding of the impact of poverty and SES on health, education, and human welfare
  • developing applications of psychology that address the effects of SES on psychological development and well-being
  • advocating for social policy that will alleviate or reduce disparities among SES groups

This student award will rotate between a practitioner/community engagement focus (even years) and a research focus (odd number years) to foster inclusivity and recognize the diverse scope of student work which addresses SES.

The award recipient will receive a framed certificate and $500 honorarium. This honorarium can be used to attend the APA Annual Convention; however, there is no requirement that it be used for that purpose. The award will be presented at the convention during the SES Network Meeting.

Eligibility

All nominees must meet the following criteria:

  • be actively engaging in research related to the construct of SES, or engaging in practice with those from a particular SES group (i.e., economically marginalized individuals, working class individuals, etc.)
  • be graduate students within their first five years of their graduate training
  • hold good academic standing (not on academic probation or have outstanding ethical violations)

  • cultural appropriateness of the intervention/outreach program
  • tailoring of existing interventions or development of new techniques to address the unique needs of a population

Research

For the research award, the following criteria will be scored on a 1–5 Likert scale when evaluating the submissions:

  • significance of this research in furthering the understanding of SES

  • strength of research design

  • stage of project completion (Projects closer to completion will receive greater weighting than those in earlier stages.)

  • dissemination platform (i.e., publication, presentation, poster)

  • implications of the research for addressing issues facing economically marginalized people or for broadening our understanding of SES
