Note: Only for those divisions where APA handles affiliate membership joins/renewals.
As we shared back in June, demographic information is now available for division members in the Division Leadership Portal.
Although much information has been added, you may have noticed some data missing. Work is beginning to collect data to fill in those gaps. We will start by surveying non-APA division affiliates in divisions with memberships handled by the Division Engagement Office.*
In addition, we are working to add questions to our standard new and renewal membership processes as well as to create separate surveying processes to collect the data at other times.
We ask you to encourage your members and affiliates to respond to these questions as the main mechanism for collecting and updating this information.
You can let members know how important this data is to you as division leaders—such as to ensure you know about your membership, to ensure equity, to assess that your mission and audience align, etc. Assure members of their data privacy; their data are secure and are available to APA and division leaders only. You can find the APA Privacy Policy online.
Three things to know about expected results:
- We anticipate reaching a maximum of 80% completion on any individual demographic field. When it comes to optional personal inquiries, a completion rate of over 80% is commendable, while a rate of over 50% is satisfactory. We do not have any evidence to suggest that the absent cases are not random, so the data we present is an accurate reflection of the entire population.
- APA members with division engagements are generally “more engaged,” meaning we are probably already close to max levels for many of these demographic and career fields.
- Even with the above efforts, the same general expectation rules apply—that there will be certain fields that may never achieve higher than 40-50%.
APA looks forward to collecting and sharing more data with you. If you have any questions, please contact your division engagement liaison or Division Engagement.
