Applying psychological science in pre-K to 12 schools and education

At APA, we believe that education is improved when informed by psychological science. Our interdisciplinary approach draws from applied psychological science to understand how children learn, what motivates their engagement, and how to foster their well-being. Through coordinated and collaborative efforts with APA’s member experts and staff, pre-K to 12 educators, and broader schooling communities, we engage in research generation, translation and application, and advocacy to create supportive educational systems that promote student academic success, wellness, health, and happiness.

How does psychological science support education?

Psychological science provides beneficial insight into the inner workings of teaching and learning (e.g., long-term retention of information, holistic assessment of students). For instance, understanding the psychological principles behind motivation can help educators design more engaging lessons, incorporating elements of autonomy, competence, and relatedness—the three basic needs outlined in self-determination theory—to foster intrinsic motivation and improve student engagement. Additionally, an evidence-based understanding of effective learning strategies for enhancing long-term retention of information may boost students’ memory.

What is the foundation of our work?

Two critical areas of work ground our efforts: our four commitments and the top 20.

How do we make an impact?

We contribute to psychological science by producing cutting-edge applied research to inform educational practices and policies, translating it into accessible formats for educators, and along with APA’s Advocacy team, championing evidence-based approaches and supporting policies in which educators and students thrive.
