Combining Focus Groups With Surveys to Enhance Cultural Validity
Statistics and Data Collection
October 2024
Stuck in a rut with how to enhance surveys to better serve communities? Take the mystery out of the process! This session considers the multiple affordances of focus groups for enhancing cultural-specific survey projects. Various definitions of culture, defined as individual experiences and the understanding of those experiences in a situated context, and how it relates to research will be discussed. Specifically, the presenter will examine survey studies that purposively highlight cultural and linguistic knowledge across class, ethnic, cultural, and other boundaries. Then, the presentation will glean the steps required to adapt survey research methods to enhance cultural validity using focus groups and consider which steps can be used in our own research.
