Now in its 11th year, APA’s Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology is a learner-centered program designed to enhance the individual and collective leadership capacity of women in psychology. Each year, approximately 35 women take part in the yearlong institute, which includes five days of interactive workshops and webinars on leadership development topics, including training in advocacy and fundraising, managing difficult relationships at work and strategic planning, among others.
“After completing the program, I really began thinking of myself as a leader and recognizing my own strengths in leadership roles,” says Heather Littleton, PhD, a professor in the department of psychology at East Carolina University. “I also feel more comfortable advocating for myself in a variety of situations.”
This year, the program will include a focus on showing women how to analyze systems so that they, in concert with others, can more effectively address systemic barriers such as sexual harassment. Learn more about the institute by visiting www.apa.org/pi/women/programs/leadership. —Amy Novotney
