Though less research has been done on protecting mental health in the hot months compared with in the cold months, there are some science-backed actions that may help.

  1. Acknowledge worry. Hot temperatures can make the threat of climate change more salient. According to the Mental Health and Our Changing Climate: Children and Youth Report 2023opens in new window by APA and ecoAmerica, young people may be particularly cognizant of the threat climate change may pose in their futures. Adults can acknowledge these fears and concerns and support youth in taking age-appropriate action.
  2. Get some green. Nature is well-known to boost mood (Meidenbauer, K. L., et al., Journal of Environmental Psychology, Vol. 72, 2020opens in new window). When possible, avoid heat-trapping concrete and look for shady, natural environments.
  3. Stay social. It’s possible that some of the mood decline for people who struggle with summer depression comes from socially isolating to avoid the heat, says Kelly Rohan, PhD, a clinical psychologist at the University of Vermont who studies seasonal affective disorder. Keeping up regular social engagements—in cool locations, if necessary—can prevent a cycle of isolation and deeper depression. Checking in on vulnerable neighbors is also important during heat waves, says Ali Frazzini, a policy adviser with a background in public health at the L.A. County Chief Sustainability Office.
  4. Seek treatment. Summer depression is no less responsive to evidence-based therapy and medication than regular major depression, Rohan says. If you are having a hard time in the heat of the summer, seek help.
