The  COVID-19 pandemic has heightened levels of stress and worry for many Americans, including city and county leaders. Local leaders face unique challenges and stressors during times of crisis as they grapple with supporting their residents, employees, stakeholders, as well as themselves and their families.

In this three-part live virtual series, participants engage with government and human behavior experts on how the pandemic takes a psychological toll on individuals, the community, and the workplace. 

Each virtual forum offers evidence-based strategies to arm city and county leaders to effectively address the psychological impact of COVID-19 on their employees, residents, and stakeholders. Throughout the series, discussions include a focus on overcoming stigma, disparate impacts on vulnerable populations, and the importance of equitable approaches to ensure better outcomes for all.

Taking Care of Yourself: Self-care Strategies for Effective Leadership During COVID-19

City and county leaders are facing unique personal stressors while responding to the COVID-19 pandemic. Leaders can find it challenging to take time to manage their health and well-being and attend to personal and family needs.  

In this interactive teletown hall, hear from leaders with decades of experience in local governing and mental well-being as they offer insight into why self-care is important for effective leadership. They will also explore evidence-based strategies to help leaders better manage stress and improve their performance.

Taking Care of Your Workforce: How Local Government Leaders Can Support Employees Through COVID-19

City and local government employees are facing new stressors, whether they are adjusting to remote work, or they are having to navigate regular contact with the public and the virus’ potential spread. City and county leaders play a critical role in helping employees adjust and adapt at work while helping them feel safe and productive. 

In this interactive teletown hall, leaders will learn about the types of stressors their employees face and how those stressors can affect both their performance at work and their time away from work. Experts will facilitate a discussion on why it’s important to talk about mental health with employees and how to direct them to resources, such as employee assistance programs.

Leaders will also learn science-backed strategies for adopting policies and practices that can help employees adapt to change and feel supported by their city or county employers.

Taking Care of Your Community: Addressing Collective Trauma in Times of Crisis

COVID-19 has disrupted many people’s connections to mental health services and resources that are needed during a crisis. As we have seen in recent events, it has also compounded existing racial and socio-economic trauma.

Local government leaders can help rebuild important connections to care and assist residents in addressing their own well-being during these challenging times.

In this interactive teletown hall, community and mental health leaders will examine the psychological impact of COVID-19 on collective trauma.

Join us to discuss ways government leaders can talk publicly about the mental health toll and burden related to the coronavirus and pandemic-related stress of recent uprisings in response to racism incidents. Learn how to harness community resources to address low-level distress and acute mental health conditions.

Expert panelists will provide science-backed strategies to encourage a public health approach to mental health, with a focus on addressing stigma, impacts on vulnerable communities and ways to advance equity.
