Equity, diversity, and inclusion

EDI framework
As a mission-driven organization that applies the best available psychological science to benefit society and improve lives, APA is committed to infusing the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) into all aspects of the work we do.

EDI is a guiding principle in our strategic plan, because it is central to how we advance our strategic priorities. Our chief diversity officer and EDI Office catalyze our leadership and innovation in this space, but our entire organization is responsible for realizing our EDI vision and mission. Our EDI framework was collaboratively shaped by our volunteer leaders, governance, and staff and promotes shared accountability for EDI across APA. It is a foundational tool to create substantive, transformative, and sustainable change within APA, across the psychology profession, and throughout broader society.

APA views its commitments to promote human rights as integral to its mission

This commitment complements APA’s mission to advance human welfare using psychological science and evidence-based knowledge. It reflects our understanding that the psychological impacts of violence, hate, and intergenerational trauma require immediate attention and long-term support.

The Resolution on APA, Psychology, and Human Rights (2021)opens in new window states that respect for human rights is central to psychological ethics.

Mission Statement

To advance EDI through psychological science that champions thought leadership, innovation and excellence.

Vision
