Disrupting the Cycle: Caregiver Accommodation and the Maintenance of Child Anxiety Disorders and OCD
Practice, Research & Resources With McLean Hospital
October 2025
Caregivers are naturally inclined to alleviate a child’s distress and anxiety. However, caregiver accommodation can inadvertently reinforce anxious behaviors and the cycle of avoidance.
This one-hour session focuses on clinical skills to support caregivers in reducing accommodation by recognizing these behaviors, understanding how these behaviors can maintain anxiety, and enhancing caregivers’ confidence in reducing them.
Learning objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants can:
- Describe patterns of caregiver accommodation that contribute to child anxiety and related disorders and explain their role in maintaining symptoms.
- Explore strategies for helping caregivers identify accommodation behaviors and the underlying beliefs that drive them.
- Discuss approaches to fostering collaborative caregiver partnerships aimed at reducing accommodation effectively.
