Much has changed in our understanding of the brain and memory. Some states no longer have a statute of limitations on reporting sexual trauma because victims may report trauma much later in life, often in their 50s. The “memory wars” of the past successfully debated the concept of repressed memories as research uncovered the problem of “false memories.” Recent research, however, has shown that memories may not be “repressed” but that people may still have difficulty remembering trauma.

This presentation explores research on memory, trauma, and forgetting and how best to begin treatment. It also discusses the high incidence of substance use subsequent to trauma and how this impedes treatment and explores new evidence-based therapies that concurrently treat trauma and substance use.
