Although substance use and substance use disorders have historically been more common in men, the gender gap in substance use is narrowing. Concerning public health trends related to substance use continue to worsen for women. Women with substance use disorders are disproportionately affected by co-occurring disorders such as depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, and anxiety disorders. Accordingly, there is an urgent need for improved access to effective, gender-responsive care for women and girls with substance use disorders.

  • Public health trends in substance use
  • Sex differences in the clinical presentation and treatment needs of those with co-occurring disorders
