Non-Abstinent Approaches to Substance Use Disorders
Practice, Research & Resources With McLean Hospital
April 2025
The purpose of this presentation is to provide a balanced view on alternative approaches in clinical research and practice.
Treatment of substance use disorders has historically focused on abstinence as an outcome of clinical studies and as a universal goal for patients seeking care. Abstaining from substance use often leads to full remission of symptoms. Nonetheless, many patients do not choose this path, and for some the goal of abstinence is not readily attainable.
This 1-hour session explores arguments for alternative approaches in clinical research and practice.
Learning objectives
By the end of this webinar, participants can:
- Explain the health benefits of reducing drinking to lower risk levels as defined by the World Health Organization.
- Provide two reasons why researching non-abstinent outcomes can aid in developing effective treatments for substance use disorders.
- Identify the potential advantages of reducing the use of substances other than alcohol (e.g., cocaine, cannabis).
