Putting psychology to work

The opening keynote for APA's virtual conference explores the various roles psychologists can play in business and industry and why psychologists are particularly well equipped to add value in a wide range of work environments. The director of APA's Center for Organizational Excellence, David Ballard, PsyD, challenges participants to think beyond traditional career paths and consider the core skills psychologists can bring to the table, as well as how they can build the necessary competencies to work ethically and effectively in applied settings. He concludes with an introduction to communicating your unique strengths and making the connections you need to find opportunities, advance your career, and have the most impact in your profession.

David W. Ballard, PsyD, MBA, is assistant executive director for Organizational Excellence at APA. He is responsible for leadership, direction, evaluation and management of all activities related to APA’s Center for Organizational Excellence, which includes the association’s Psychologically Healthy Workplace Program.

Ballard has provided research, consultation, and training to government agencies, corporations, medical schools, and universities in the areas of workplace health and productivity, public health, prevention, and health care finance. He co-chairs Work, Stress, and Health, an international conference co-sponsored by APA, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Society for Occupational Health Psychology, is an external member of NIOSH’s National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA) Healthy Work Design and Well-being Cross-Sector Council, and is currently on the Board of Directors of The Health Project /C. Everett Koop National Health Awards.
