Promoting equity and inclusion in journals

AAPA’s Journals program has been measuring uptake on many of the 30 recommended equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) actions highlighted in APA’s EDI Toolkit for Journal Editors, which offers resources, standards, initiatives, and recommendations from APA Publishing to support editors in promoting EDI in their journals. At the beginning of 2022, only five of APA’s journals asked authors to justify the demographic distribution of their samples. As of this fall, 24 journals (26% of those published by APA) now recommend or require this information from submitting authors. In addition, 25 APA-published journals now offer editorial fellowships for scholars from historically excluded groups, a 400% increase from the beginning of the year.

Many other journals have adopted EDI policies new to APA journals, such as asking authors to report the year or years of data collection in the title or recommending that authors acknowledge inequities in citation practices and take action to reduce them, an effort known as citational justice. New updates to APA Style Student Workbook

APA has added 28 quizzes and a glossary of terms to the Mastering APA Style Student Workbook (7th edition) to improve the way students learn APA Style and scholarly writing. The quizzes are interactive and correspond with the workbook’s nine modules. Instructors who want to adopt the student workbook as part of a course can integrate the workbook with their school’s learning management system, allowing them to customize the number of quiz attempts and to export scores to their gradebook.
