Clinicians work tirelessly to treat children, adolescents, and young adults struggling with self-injury or suicidality. An integral part of this process is to support the entire family by teaching parents and caregivers evidence-based skills and strategies to support their loved ones as well as themselves. By providing such skills and support, clinicians contribute to more resilient family systems that are more likely to adhere to treatment and recommendations, mitigate the effects of trauma and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and create a strong, supportive foundation for family well-being.

Learning objectives

This presentation covers how to:

  • Identify trauma and PTSD symptomatology that parents and caregivers often exhibit when a loved one struggles with life-threatening behaviors.
  • Recognize the protective factors that can lessen the impacts of trauma on parents and caregivers.
  • Describe how to create an engaging and healthy support system for an entire family.

This program does not offer CE credit.
