In September 2024, 50% of licensed psychologists either agreed or strongly agreed that they were familiar with AI tools in psychology, but only 29% of licensed psychologists had used AI tools in their work at least once in the past 12 months. About 1 in 10 licensed psychologists (11%) used AI tools monthly, weekly, or daily at work, whereas 18% used AI tools once or several times in the past year.

Early career psychologists (those within 10 years of receiving their doctoral degree) reported using AI tools more often than those in more advanced career stages. About 41% of early career psychologists used AI at least once in the past year and 19% used AI monthly or more frequently, compared to 22% and 9%, respectively, of licensed psychologists in the latest career stage. This could suggest differences in familiarity with new technology, with recent graduates being exposed to novel technology in their training. Continuing education courses and on-the-job training could improve familiarity and potential uptake of AI tools in professional practice.
