AI is developing at a pace that few of us fully anticipated. It is reshaping how we work, how we learn, how we relate to one another, and how we make decisions that affect millions of lives. And yet, in the rush to build faster, smarter, and more capable systems, something essential has been missing: the human layer.

That is not a metaphor. When you look at how AI systems are constructed—from computing power and infrastructure, to data, to models, to products and applications, to deployment—the science of human behavior has largely been an afterthought. The technology has advanced rapidly. How its design accounts for human complexity and our understanding of how it shapes behavior in return have not kept pace.

This is precisely where psychology comes in. And it is what has driven APA to launch the Center for Behavioral Science and AI.

The center is built on a straightforward premise: Frontier AI companies want better products, safer deployment, greater trust and legitimacy, and human benefit at scale. What we bring is independent scientific infrastructure, behavioral and developmental science for AI design, and practical guidance grounded in evidence. Rooted in our mission to improve people’s lives, APA’s role includes reducing harm caused by AI and ensuring that it ultimately benefits humanity.

Our model is deliberate. There is a strict boundary between the science and the technology companies, with APA recommending research-based principles and frameworks for AI design and evaluation. The translation of those principles into technical application requires codesigning specifications with the tech industry. Implementation will be led by those with the technical expertise to execute it. Each layer has its role. Ours is to ensure that psychological science is elevated and translated, without ever being compromised.

The center’s work is taking on pressing, high-stakes issues like youth well-being—an area where APA has already caught the attention of the tech industry, policymakers, and the public—and workforce, where AI is creating enormous ripple effects across industries.

The decisions being made right now will shape human experience for generations. Adding the human layer is imperative—both for mitigating AI’s harms and for using AI to reimagine systems that are more effective, efficient, and equitable.

Psychology is at the forefront of one of the most consequential technological shifts in human history—not reacting to it but shaping it. That is precisely where we belong.
